It was expected that the former Manchester United and Aston Villa midfielder would complete a deal with Roberto Di Matteo’s side after talks between the two parties this week.

The Cameroon player struggled to find his form during a largely disappointing period in the Premier League, and boss Di Matteo looks unwilling to take a chance on him now.

“West Brom have decided not to pursue their interest in Odense midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba,” read a club statement.

He travelled to England to meet the club earlier this week.

"But, following medical tests and further talks between the clubs, Albion have decided not to proceed with a deal."

Di Matteo knows he must improve a squad which won promotion last season in order to avoid yet another relegation from the Premier League for the Hawthorns club.

It appears that a striker will be his top priority considering that Roman Bednar, Luke Moore and Simon Cox are all struggling for fitness.

"It is a big concern to us at the moment. We are working on things but it's difficult. Everyone is after a striker," explained the manager.

"I've been saying since the end of last season that we need more players."
